OSBAE Board Appointments

The Oregon State Board of Architect Examiners Board of Directors is comprised of 7 members; 5 of the members are registered architects who have resided in Oregon for at least 5 years and 2 are non-architects, or public members.  Check out their website to learn more about the OSBAE board members (https://public.orlicensing.oregon.gov/ORBAEPortal/BoardAdditional.aspx?board=BAE&boardLinkID=205).  Board members are selected by the Governor, and terms are 4 years.  Board members are typically appointed for two terms.

Traditionally, terms begin and end distinctly for each position.  OSBAE is in the process of realigning the beginning of each new member’s term to start September 1.  This schedule aligns better with annual activities board members are involved in, including attendance at NCARB meetings, and improves onboarding and training for board members.

The first impact of this policy change is a delay in the appointment of a replacement for Jim Robertson, AIA, Eugene, whose term expires on January 24, 2020.  However, the search for the new appointment is already underway.  According to Lisa Howard, OSBAE Executive Director, “In order to keep the momentum going, we will continue with the recruitment for the position and submit our recommendations to the Governor as soon as possible. The new appointment would be effective September 1, but if the Governor selects a replacement in advance the board could invite the incoming member to participate on a subcommittee to give them a head start.”

AIA Oregon provides recommendations to the Governor’s office on candidates for the Architecture positions.  We request candidates submit their application directly to the Governor’s office and send us a copy as well, along with a resume.  If interested, please send your information to cwilson@aiaoregon.org.  For each opening, we form a small evaluation committee to review the applications, conduct a phone interview for each candidate, and evaluate relative to a list of criteria, including experience and impact to the diversity of the board.  The committee forwards their recommendation to the AIA Oregon board of directors, who, if in agreement, forward the AIA Oregon recommendation to the Governor.
