About the Project
The Portland State University Schnitzer School of Art + Art History + Design is located on the 44-acre public research university campus in downtown Portland, Oregon and is one of the forty-nine building on campus. Previously a parking lot and tennis court were situated here, and the new building is set to invite connections easily to the adjacent Shattuck Hall, which houses the architecture department and to the Native American Student and Community Center, both buildings which flourish with art and culture currently.
The building also opens to SW Broadway, a bustling urban corridor, complete with businesses, vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, and with more connection to campus offerings, and celebrates its frontage on the South Park Blocks with a welcoming entry courtyard filled with hand laid brick paving and enveloped by native landscaping that seamlessly evolves into the green cladded structure that emerges from the plantings and surrounding tree canopy.
The new 4-story building, constructed mostly from wood framing including cross-laminated timber (CLT) is designed to hold classrooms , studio spaces, and faculty offices. A view terrace and outdoor spaces provide optimal daylight and invite the lush exterior environment indoors via enriched views. This all-electric building with sedum green roof includes natural ventilation and mindful material selection.
