2025 has been a year of shifting vibes--in politics, business, technology, and across many aspects of society--often with sustainability taking a back seat to other concerns. As challenging as it has been for sustainable design, this shift demonstrates how quickly culture can change, and offers the opportunity for the design community to initiate a vibe shift of our own. The goals of sustainable design--human health, resilient communities, social equity, and functioning ecosystems--represent simple outcomes that everyone wants. So why has it been so challenging to deliver?

By establishing a few fundamental ideals--Health is important, sustainable design costs less, and good design works--can we refocus design efforts towards universally desirable outcomes and establish the value of “sustainable design” for the general public?

A vibe shift will require a new way of thinking about sustainability. It might be just what we need.
