Digital Design Series - Hennebery Eddy Architects

“Designing for Energy and Carbon Reduction – Bend Science Station”

Dan Petrescu, AIA and Ashley Nored, IIDA, Associates at Hennebery Eddy Architects, Inc., will present on the Bend Science Station, recipient of the 2020 Oregon Architecture Awards 2030 Award. This project is located on the OSU Cascades campus in Bend, Oregon and serves approximately 7,000 students, 200 teachers from nearly 40 schools from across Deschutes County annually. The lab building embodies the non-profit’s mission of empowering students to make discoveries not possible in the regular classroom by engaging with tools, technology, and the freedom to ask and answer their own questions. Sustainable building features include passive ventilation, building orientation, material selection, solar rooftop array, and efficient HVAC and heat recovery ventilation. Alen Mahić, from University of Oregon’s Energy Studies in Buildings Laboratory will provide updates on the 2030 carbon calculator and technical instruction for inclusion on projects.

Dan’s experience includes award-winning projects with Hennebery Eddy that range from educational and public buildings to private offices and residential projects. He is skilled at researching, preparing, and managing regulatory approvals, including negotiation and resolution of complex building code issues and conflicts. He will be on the front lines, coordinating with the consultant team and putting together thorough design documents. Dan takes personal ownership of his work, consistently addressing client needs promptly yet thoughtfully, with innovation, clarity, and precision. Dan is skilled in the use of Revit (building information modeling) software from design through construction documents. He graduated from the University of Oregon and holds a Master of Architecture degree

Associate, Hennebery Eddy Architects

Ashley Nored is a nationally accredited interior design professional and associate at Hennebery Eddy Architects in Portland, Oregon. A champion of “net-positive” design solutions, she collaborates with clients and end users to create engaging, human-centered healthy environments. With prior experience as a sustainability consultant, she integrates creative sustainable design principles into each phase of the interior design process, synthesizing functional and technical requirements for Hennebery Eddy's academic, civic and cultural projects.

Alen Mahić

Alen is a Research Assistant at the University of Oregon (UO) Energy Studies in Buildings Laboratory (ESBL). He holds an M.Arch degree from the University of Idaho architecture program. Over the past 10 years his work has included energy efficiency research, technical assistance, educational outreach, and design consulting. Alen's focus has primarily been to bridge the gap between academic research and practical application of digital daylighting simulation, building energy simulation, and visual comfort and glare analysis methods based on High Dynamic Range Imaging.
