John Reynolds, FAIA
Professor of Architecture Emeritus
University of Oregon
For 50+ years John Reynolds has been interested in how people use energy in buildings, and how buildings shape that energy usage. He has taught both architecture design and environmental control systems at the University of Oregon since 1967. He is co-author of "Mechanical and Electrical Equipment for Buildings," 6th through 11th editions, published by John Wiley & Sons. John received a teaching Fulbright Grant to Argentina, 1988 where he taught “Arquitectura Bioclimatica” in Spanish. His investigations into courtyard buildings led to a grant from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, 1995-96. This resulted in "Courtyards: Aesthetic, Social, and Thermal Delight" © 2002, John Wiley and Sons.
John received the American Solar Energy Society’s Passive Pioneer Award in 1997, and was elected an ASES Fellow in 2000. He then served as Chair of the ASES Board. John was also named a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 2003. He was named Distinguished Professor by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture in 1998, the first Oregon faculty member to be so honored. The Cascadia Region of the USGBC honored John as an Honorary Fellow in 2009.
He recently retired from the Board of the non-profit Energy Trust of Oregon, based in Portland, where he served as Board President for five years. John was the only one of the original board members still serving when he retired.
2019 AIA OREGON YOUNG ARCHITECT AWARD WINNER
The Young Architect Award honors individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and made significant contributions to the architecture profession early in their careers. AIA Oregon sees this award as a stepping-stone to the National Young Architect Award application and aims to support Young Architects in their career pursuits through this recognition.
Carin Carlson, AIA
Associate
Hennebery Eddy Architects
Carin Carlson, AIA, is committed to cultivating and guiding current and future stewards, professionals, and advocates for historic resources through exemplary professional practice, leadership, mentorship, and education.
For eight years Carin actively contributed to Portland’s enviable built environment as a Historic Landmarks Commissioner. This influential position is one of the most demanding volunteer roles imaginable for a practicing architect. As a commissioner, Carin was a standard bearer for historic preservation and design excellence by helping hundreds of applicants and architects craft thoughtful solutions that respect our city’s historic resources. In the face of mounting development pressure, Carin co-authored design guidelines for the Chinatown and Skidmore Historic Districts to safeguard the character of these districts while also allowing for sensitive design proposals.
