Accessibility | Everything You Wanted to know and More by Code Unlimited
5 AIA LU|HSW
Lunch Included - Sponsored by
Code Unlimited

Accessibility requirements are some of the most confusing out there, especially in multi-family housing. With changing codes, interpretations, and trends, accessibility is not a static standard. This class will cover topics from basic accessibility concepts to minimization of risk. Presented in a logical progression, attendees will learn broad concepts down to the details that affect their design and construction projects. Solutions to resolving common issues will also be covered, throughout the presentation taking into account aesthetics, price, and level of tolerable risk.
Presented by Joshua Klyber and Mike Shaw, Code Unlimited

1pm-2:30pm

PAE Living Building Tour by PAE - Attendance is Limited! Register Now to ensure your spot!
1 AIA LU|HSW

The PAE Living Building tour will allow participants to see inside Portland’s first Living Building. Guests will learn the story of how the building came to be while touring the 5 floors, including the mechanical room, Deckony, lobby, and reception desk. Throughout, they will see examples of non-toxic materials, Indigenous artwork, creative re-use, energy efficiency, and flexible workspaces. Led by PAE

Code for the Environment
1.5 AIA LU|HSW

This presentation is focused on increasing the overall resiliency of our communities not only through providing current protection methods for wildfire impacts, but also through implementing the newest energy code standards to improve energy efficiency and push the goal of zero fossil-fuel greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

The presenters will begin with outlining the hazards of building in or near the wildland-urban interface with emphasis on addressing building conditions influenced by ground slope, groundcover, and climate conditions. While the urban interface codes have not changed much in recent years, practical adaptive responses that reduce the likelihood of building damage, including exterior wall construction, opening protection, wall projections, and exterior building elements such as decks, breezeways, alcoves, and screening will be introduced for attendees to consider in their projects.

Presenters will then pivot to introduce how both Washington and Oregon state energy codes have recently been updated to include several new requirements that designers and architects should also address early in their building design process. These include changes to envelope insulation, air barriers, lighting and mechanical systems, an enhanced list of efficiency credits, a total system performance path for HVAC, an outcome-based energy budget compliance path in the Washington State Energy Code and the code amendment proposals under consideration for the Oregon Reach Code.
Presented by Mark Chubb, Code Unlimited and Krishnan Gowri, Intertek Building Science Solutions

Universal Design
1.5 AIA LU|HSW

The design and construction industry is overdue for updated practices to help us meet the needs of our neurodiverse and physically disabled community members. This presentation will introduce these diverse communities, and specific strategies to accommodate their currently unmet needs. Practical and cost-conscious methods will be discussed, as well as the importance of engaging with those underserved communities to create recommendations for design teams. Presented by Mike Shaw, Code Unlimited with Hannah Silver, Informal Function
