Digital Design Series - “Climate Change and Wildfires as Catalysts for New Forms of Architecture and Land Use.” Presented by Jesse Keenan, a globally recognized thought leader, whose research focuses on the intersection of climate change adaptation and the built environment. His presentation examined the scope and scale of Oregon’s wildfires through the lens of the state’s robust history of growth management and environmental regulation.

2020 Oregon Architecture Awards Virtual Celebration On October 23,2020, AIA Oregon members and friends gathered virtually to celebrate design excellence at the Oregon Architecture Awards. A jury of architects selected 13 project awards; energy data collected from project submissions helped to determine an Architecture 2030 Award; and the AIA Oregon Executive Committee selected 2 Professional Achievement Awards from those nominated.

Urban Design Panel Presentation 10.20.20 - Park Avenue Community Project Equity has become a growing focal point in recent years, and for many projects across the Metro region is now a mandated goal. This program explored what this meant for the Park Ave Community Project, and how approaches were adapted in light of the many challenges presented during the course of 2020.

2020 COTE Green Champion Summit The annual Oregon Committee on The Environment (COTE) Green Champion Summit brings to you the sustainability leaders from around the country and the region. This year the summit focused on creating space for inclusive and sustainable communities by highlighting some of the plans and funding in place within the City of Portland to ensure sustainable communities are available for all.

Speaker: Joshua Klyber, Code Analyst, Code Unlimited. The second of a two part accessibility course that covered topics from basic accessibility concepts to minimization of risk. Part II covered the remainder of bathrooms, kitchens, and common errors.

Holiday Farm Fire Advisory Team Meeting The first meeting of the Fire Advisory Team. The intent is to form the team through Architecture-Engineering-Construction industry professions, such as AIA, ASLA, CSI, APA, etc. The team’s role is to help connect subject experts to the MCDC as they need advice, information, and resources.

Digital Design Series: Jeffrey Commons Tiny Home Community Nir Pearlson, AIA, of Aligned Architecture and Paul Solomon of Sponsors, Inc discussed Jeffrey Commons, a Sponsors Tiny Home Community of 10 homes for homeless individuals returning to Lane County post incarceration.  The presentation covered the various needs of the inhabitants: Individuality, Community, Affordability and Sustainability, and how they were addressed.

The Architect’s Plan to Optimize Tax Incentives for 2020: Class Two - AEC Deduction Junction: What is the Function of 179D? The Energy Efficient Commercial Building Deduction, also known as 179D, was passed into law in 2006. This federal tax benefit incentivizes architects and engineers to design and invest in sustainable buildings.This course provided an overview of the program, covered eligibility and qualification requirements, reviewed case studies, and referenced recent court cases that provide encouraging guidance for architecture and engineering firms.

Digital Design Series: Embodied Carbon of Net Zero Energy Buildings - Dylan Lamar reviewed a recent LCA study of an existing Net Zero Energy multifamily building, exploring the important relationship between embodied carbon and operational carbon in Net Zero Energy Buildings.

Digital Design Series: Re-Occupy with Confidence - Practical Approaches to Reduce Risks and Create Healthier Indoor Environments. Alan Scott, FAIA, touched on considerations of how the pandemic will influence design, and the technical response to risk reduction in existing buildings, and discussed ways of reducing specific COVID-19 risks today, as well as maintaining general health and wellness into the future.

Digital Design Series: Architects Without Borders - Oregon - John Blumthal and Maab Mohammed of AWB’s Steering Committee gave a brief overview of AWB’s history and connection with AIA Oregon, how AWB is managed, how projects are selected, and how volunteer teams are organized.  Included were descriptions of projects both local and around the world.

Digital Design Series: The SAGE Classroom - Margarette Leite, Associate Professor of Architecture and Fellow, Center for Public Interest Design of the School of Architecture at Portland State University, presented the award-winning SAGE Classroom, outlining what makes it an improvement over typical modular classrooms, and how their version provides better access to healthy, affordable, energy efficient educational facilities.

Digital Design Series - In Process Justin Brooks, Principal at ZGF and Marc Brune, Principal and mechanical engineer with PAE discussed the Portland Living Building as a case study, while highlighting some of the obstacles they faced when dealing with the constraints of building a Living Building in a historic Portland neighborhood, and the creative solutions they were able to apply.
